Topics, Themes and Objectives for April 8-12th

Cougar Reading- This week we will  identify synonyms and antonyms as we use a Thesaurus and play word games in class. We will especially focus on distinguishing between shades of meaning in synonyms. For example we will compare the words "big" and "huge" and determine how and when we use those words in our writing.

Reading- In connection with our weather unit in science we will read an informative essay about the the water cycle as well as a fiction story called Grandma's Ring, a story about a young girl who is waiting for the snow to melt so she can find her Grandmother's lost ring. We will also enjoy the humorous adventure stories Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Pickels to Pittsburgh. The second graders will enjoy these informative and wacky books this week!

Spelling- Drop the "y" and add the "i"! Who remembers learning that spelling pattern when they were in second grade? I do. This week your child will experience this pattern too:)

Math-  We will conclude our topic on measurement this week by reviewing inches, feet, yards, centimeters and meters. We will have a math test on Thursday, April 7th.

Science & Writing- We will learn about the water cycle this week as we read about it, create a diagram, demonstrate precipitation with a cotton ball and water dropper, and create a cartoon water cycle.
