Curricular Updates for February 23-27

Cougar Reading-  In class this week we will read articles about the importance of Dental Health as we recognize February for being Dental Health Awareness Month. In class we will do an experiment with  two eggs simulating the long term effects of plaque on teeth and over exposure to sugary foods.
The students will make predictions, observe changes and record their observations in their learning logs.

ELA/ Social Studies- The novel Buffalo Before Breakfast will be read aloud to the students this week as part of our study of the Plains Indians. In class, the students will work in groups to answer story questions by re-reading the text and working collaboratively to come up with the answers.

We will also take an in depth look at the importance of the buffalo to the Plains Indians as we study how their means of diet, shelter, and clothing all came from the buffalo.

Math- On Tuesday we will begin Topic 13 and begin to learning about coins and counting money.

Updates February 9-13

Cougar Reading- This week the students will continue to participate in Mystery Club or GIFTS with Mrs. McWhirt on Monday. The rest of the week we will learn about presidents past and present as we get ready to celebrate Presidents Day on Monday, February 16th.

ELA / Writing/ Social Studies- In class, we have learned much about the Oregon Trail, the western expansion that took place across our country 150 years ago, and Pioneer life. This week we will reflect on all we have learned and compare life today with Pioneer times.

In honor of Black History Month in February, we spent much of January reading about Black American Heroes and creating a scrapbook. This week we will take all that we learned about these heroes and write about someone in our lives who is a hero to us.

Math-  We are enjoying a new topic on Geometry. So far we have identified angles, vertices, edges and faces on plane and solid figures. We've also classified shapes as polygons, quadrilaterals, pentagons and hexagons. This week we will review these terms and classifications.
