Cougar Reading- Story elements are the topic this week. We will identify characters, setting, problem and solution in fairy tales this week.
ELA/ Social Studies- We begin our final thematic unit of the year this week on Economics. In class, we will define words such as goods, services, consumer and producer. An in depth look at our wants vs. our needs will also take place this week.
Writing/ Science- Finishing touches to our habitat project will take place early this week and we write bibliographies to go with our animal reports. In class each habitat group will present their flora and fauna and explain various adaptations that animals and plants need to survive in their habitat.
Math- We have one final topic to cover this year in math and it is the concept of repeated addition, otherwise known as multiplication!!

Curriculum Updates March 9-13
Cougar Reading- This will be our final week for GIFTS/ Science fiction club. The students have enjoyed thier differentiated activities this quarter. We will also learn about the life and books of Dr. Seuss this week.
ELA- We completed our Native American unit by learning about legends and myths as we read and examined several Native American stories. This week we will look at legends and myths from Ireland as we prepare for St. Patrick's Day. We will spend time studying the art of storytelling and practice creating our own special retellings in class.
Math- In class we will expand on our knowledge of counting money as we practice and adding and subtracting given amounts in class

Curricular Updates for February 23-27
Cougar Reading- In class this week we will read articles about the importance of Dental Health as we recognize February for being Dental Health Awareness Month. In class we will do an experiment with two eggs simulating the long term effects of plaque on teeth and over exposure to sugary foods.
The students will make predictions, observe changes and record their observations in their learning logs.
ELA/ Social Studies- The novel Buffalo Before Breakfast will be read aloud to the students this week as part of our study of the Plains Indians. In class, the students will work in groups to answer story questions by re-reading the text and working collaboratively to come up with the answers.
We will also take an in depth look at the importance of the buffalo to the Plains Indians as we study how their means of diet, shelter, and clothing all came from the buffalo.
Math- On Tuesday we will begin Topic 13 and begin to learning about coins and counting money.

Updates February 9-13
Cougar Reading- This week the students will continue to participate in Mystery Club or GIFTS with Mrs. McWhirt on Monday. The rest of the week we will learn about presidents past and present as we get ready to celebrate Presidents Day on Monday, February 16th.
ELA / Writing/ Social Studies- In class, we have learned much about the Oregon Trail, the western expansion that took place across our country 150 years ago, and Pioneer life. This week we will reflect on all we have learned and compare life today with Pioneer times.
In honor of Black History Month in February, we spent much of January reading about Black American Heroes and creating a scrapbook. This week we will take all that we learned about these heroes and write about someone in our lives who is a hero to us.

THIS WEEK IN SECOND GRADE:
Cougar Reading: During the third quarter your students will be working in designated thematic groups two day a week. Some student will be participating in an enrichment group called GIFTS. This group will be working on hands-on activities designed to promote higher order thinking and problem solving. GIFTS will be co-taught by myself, Mrs. Shawn McWhirt and Mrs. Debra Messner. Some of my students will be working with Mrs. Vaughan, Mrs. Dolan, and Mrs. Smith learning about the genres of Mysteries and Science fiction. They will be reading some great literature in class! Gifts and Mystery/Sci Fi Club will meet on Mondays and Thursdays this quarter. Be sure to ask your child what they are learning about during Cougar Time!!
ELA/ Social Studies: In class we have jumped in 2015 by learning about inventions, inventors and innovations. In class we are reading the historical fiction novel : Night of the Magicians, a Magic Tree House book where Jack and Annie travel to the Worlds Fair in 1889 to the World's Fair in Paris.
We've also had a blast learning about the invention of the popsicles, mayonnaise and frisbees.
This week we will ponder the question of how inventions have changed the lives of people for the better as we learn about the inventions of paper, phones, trains, cars and planes. We will compare life before and after these inventions. We will analyze the designs and innovations that have been made over the past 100 years to inventions we use every day.
Also, your child will be working on their own invention at home too! Watch for information to come home on Monday!!
Math: Three-digit addition and subtraction is our focus in Topic 11 and your students are doing an amazing job tackling these concepts! They will be tested on Wednesday, January 21st.

Cougar Reading- In class we will learn about collective and possessive nouns.
ELA/Science- This week we begin our next science themed unit on Matter. This week we will identify the properties of matter as we test, compare, and record our observations regarding the color, texture, hardness and flexibility of given objects. We will also analyze the observable properties of solids, liquids and gases.
Math- We will begin Topic 9 this week in class. The students will learn about subtraction with regrouping.
Writing- Santa Letters and cursive writing is on the agenda this week!

November 3-7, 2014
Cougar Reading- In class this week we will practice the art of note taking as we learn about landforms around the world such as mountains, glaciers, canyons, valleys and plains. We will relate our knowledge of plate tectonics to understand how these landforms were created and changed over time.
ELA/ Science- This week in class we are learning about changes that happen to Earth's surface quickly such as volcanoes and earthquakes and changes that happen slowly such as erosion and weathering. Hands on learning experiences such as creating tin-foil volcanoes, simulating earthquakes with colored rice, and examining the effects of weathering and erosion with sand and water will happen this week in class!
Math- In class we will finish and review Topic 6 Addition Strategies and take a math test on Tuesday, November 4th and then begin Topic 7 Subtraction Strategies.
