Content Objectives for September 2-6,2014

Cougar Reading-  In connection with our integrated Civics &Government unit students will read Laws For Kids this week, an article in Studies Weekly about rules and responsibilities and Arthur's Pet Business by Marc Brown.

Spelling- Short vowel patterns will be studied and practiced this week

ELA/ Social Studies- This week we will define the words: rules, responsibility and rules. In class we will read the humorous book Officer Buckle and Glory and identify examples of citizenship. Students will examine the meaning of what it means to be a good citizen and find ways to show citizenship locally and globally!!

Math-  We begin Topic 2 this week and will practice adding doubles, near doubles and the making 10 strategy to become proficient with addition.

Content Objectives August 25-29, 2014

Cougar Reading    This week in class we will review the rules and procedures for the Daily5: Read To Self, Partner Reading, Word Work, Listening Station and Writing. We will also learn how to select "good fit books" for independent reading and create a rap video entitled the I-Pick Rap!

Small Group Reading-  The Rigby Benchmarking Assessment will be administered to every student this week. Also, the Dibels (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literacy Skills) Assessment will also be given om Thursday.  I look forward to beginning small group reading after Labor Day.

Math-  This week we will  review the concepts for simple addition and subtraction and introduce fact families. We will take our first math test on Friday, August 29th.

ELA / SS& SCI  Our first Integrated unit is Civics Government. We will begin this unit by exploring the character traits of courage and honesty. In class we will  read and explore various literature selections such as Junie B. Jones Is A Crook  and  The Boy Who Cried Wolf  as we discuss, role play, and debate these virtues.

In class we will also sharpen up our writing skills as we differentiate between full and fragmented sentences,and identify subjects and predicates. We will create a book of sensational sentences that each child will have an  opportunity to bring home so that they can teach YOU all about sentence structure!
