Updates for March 31st- April 4th, 2014

Cougar Reading- Next week we will explore "cause" and "effect" as we  determine what is happening (cause) and why (effect) it is happening.  We will read two humorous stories about a boy named Jimmy and a boa constrictor as we practice this important comprehension skill.

Spelling- we will study word the suffixes "er" and "est" in class

ELA- Last week we began a new science unit, Plants & Animals.  We studied how plants grow and identified various plant habitats. This week we will review vocabulary words  and take a multiple choice test.  We will also classify animals as mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish as we examine the habitats of each.  A review of adjectives and identifying main ideas and supporting details using non-fiction text will also take place this week.

Math- We are about to embark on our 15th math topic this school year. We will learn about measurement and will learn how to measure using non-standard units, inches, feet, yards, meter, centimeters, and millimeters. Lots of hands on learning will be happening this week and it's going to be a blast!

Themes, Concepts and Objectives for March 3-7,2014

Cougar Reading-  We will read about a Native American Pow-Wow this week and view photographs from an actual Pow-Wow as we discuss the similarities and differences between Native American celebrations and our celebrations.

ELA/ Social Studies-
We will take a short pause from small group reading this week so that some students can be benchmarked before the end of the quarter. There will be no weekend reading homework until after spring break.

In class we will complete our analysis of Native American customs as we learn how and why Native American were named. In class, we will assign one another Native American names and participate in our own version of a "pow-wow".

Students will study legends and myths this week. We will read various Native American legends and discover the overall "lesson" that each story conveys.

Various non-fiction articles about Plains Indians will be read in class and we will practice  re-reading passages of the text to find answers to questions

Spelling- We will practice spelling words with silent letters this week.

Math- We began  Topic 13: Money last week. Student identified half-dollar, quarter, dime, nickel and penny. In class we are learning how to organize and count coins. We will be counting amounts up to a dollar in class. A brief history of coins will be shared with the students this week. Be sure to ask your child why the dime is smaller than the nickel. They will be able to answer that question:)
