Cougar Reading- We will be reading short passages and picking out the main idea and supporting details in fiction and non-fiction passages. In class, we will read the passages together and use colored highligter pens as we analyze the text.
Reading- The second graders will begin a unit on Heroes by reading short biographies about famous black Americans in history. We will be creating a scrapbook of these famous Americans to celebrate Black History Month in February. As we read about these heroes in class we will pay special attention to the main idea of each story and the suporting details. These amazing scrapbooks will be unveiled at parent teacher conferences in February.
Math- This week in math we will review concepts from Topic 11, Three Digit Additon and Subtraction, and take a math test on Wednesday, January 22nd. We will begin a short unit on telling time next. We will focus on telling time to the hour, half hour, quarter hour, and five minutes. We will also practice solving word problems in class.
ELA/ Social Studies/ Writing- In class, we will continue to explore the essential question of how inventions have changed/ effected our daily lives. We will ask this question as we learn about the invention of steamboats, trains, and planes and write about our reflections in our learning logs.
We will also share and discuss our invention projects on Thursday, January 23rd. In writing, we will draft descriptive paragraphs about our invenions and create a poster sized advertisement in preperation of our invention fair which will take place on Friday, January 24th and Monday, January 27th.

Curriculum Updates January 13-17, 2014
Cougar Reading- On Monday and Fridays we will be starting a mystery club. This week we will learn mystery terminology. We will also practice using adjectives and adverbs in our writing.
English Language Arts- In class we have been learning about Inventors, Inventions and Innovations as we explore how our lives are effected by inventions of the past. In reading, we are reading the Magic Tree House novel Night of the New Magicians aloud in class and working collaboratively to answer story questions. This novel takes place at the 1889 World's Fair in Paris, France and the main characters Jack and Annie meet up with the inventors Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Louis Pasteur and Gustave Eiffel.
During our afternoon block of learning time, we will focus on how inventions have changed our lives as we study inventions and innovations in communication, technology and transportation. Be prepared, your second grader is sure to impress you with their knowledge.
As a culminating activity, the second graders are looking forward to having their own Inventor's Fair. At home your child will be coming up with their own invention that they will bring to school to share with their classmates. Information will come home in Monday folders regarding this project.
Math- Three digit addition and subtraction is our current topic. This unit should not be too difficult as it an extension of two digit addition and subtraction. We will have a topic test on Wednesday, January 22nd
Writing- In writing we will be focusing on writing technical and non-fiction pieces this quarter. Currently, we are stressing the importance of sentence structure and punctuation. We are also beginning to introduce lower case cursive letters.
