Themes, Concepts and Objectives for February 3-7
Cougar Reading- This week we will read about George Washington and write about his accomplishments in class. We will use laptops to type up a mini report about our nation's first president.
ELA- As part of our Pioneer Theme we will read Twister On Tuesday, by Mary Pope Osborne. In this Magic Tree House novel the characters Jack and Annie travel to back to the prairie of Kansas and discover just how hard every day life was for the pioneers. In class, the chapters will be read aloud but then the students will work in collaborative groups to re-read chapters and answer story questions.
This week we will write a historical adventure story about traveling the Oregon Trial with our family and pets. We will use what we've learned in class as we write about packing our wagon for the long trip and handling the hardships that pioneers encountered.
We will also learn about the everday lives of pioneer families as we study the roles of men and women during this era, learn about the types of homes they built and find out what pioneer school was like for the children. A class big book will be generated as we break into groups and study these individual concepts in detail.
Spelling- The /oi/ and /oy/ spelling pattern will be introduced this week.
Math- Topic 12 covers Geometry. This week, we will examine flat surfices, vertices and edges of solid figures in class and relate them to plane figures. In small groups, I will be reviewing and reteaching prior concepts such as three-digit addition and subtraction and telling time on an analog clock.
