January 12-16,2015

THIS WEEK IN SECOND GRADE:

Cougar Reading: During the third quarter your students will be working in designated thematic groups two day a week. Some student will be participating in an enrichment group called GIFTS. This group will be working on hands-on activities designed to promote higher order thinking and problem solving. GIFTS will be co-taught by myself, Mrs. Shawn McWhirt and Mrs. Debra Messner.  Some of my students will be working with  Mrs. Vaughan, Mrs. Dolan, and Mrs. Smith learning about the genres of Mysteries and Science fiction. They will be reading some great literature in class! Gifts and Mystery/Sci Fi Club will meet on Mondays and Thursdays this quarter. Be sure to ask your child what they are learning about during Cougar Time!!

ELA/ Social Studies:  In class we have jumped in 2015 by learning about inventions, inventors and innovations. In class we are reading the historical fiction  novel : Night of the Magicians, a Magic Tree House book where Jack and Annie travel to the Worlds Fair in 1889 to the World's Fair in Paris.

We've also had a blast learning about the invention of the popsicles, mayonnaise and frisbees.

This week we will ponder the question of how inventions have changed the lives of people for the better as we learn about the inventions of paper, phones, trains, cars and planes. We will compare life before and after these inventions. We will analyze the designs and innovations that have been made over the past 100 years to inventions we use every day.

Also, your child will be working on their own invention at home too! Watch for information to come home on Monday!!

Math:  Three-digit addition and subtraction is our focus in Topic 11 and your students are doing an amazing job tackling these concepts!  They will be tested on Wednesday, January 21st.
