Cougar Reading- On Monday and Fridays we will be starting a mystery club. This week we will learn mystery terminology. We will also practice using adjectives and adverbs in our writing.
English Language Arts- In class we have been learning about Inventors, Inventions and Innovations as we explore how our lives are effected by inventions of the past. In reading, we are reading the Magic Tree House novel Night of the New Magicians aloud in class and working collaboratively to answer story questions. This novel takes place at the 1889 World's Fair in Paris, France and the main characters Jack and Annie meet up with the inventors Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Louis Pasteur and Gustave Eiffel.
During our afternoon block of learning time, we will focus on how inventions have changed our lives as we study inventions and innovations in communication, technology and transportation. Be prepared, your second grader is sure to impress you with their knowledge.
As a culminating activity, the second graders are looking forward to having their own Inventor's Fair. At home your child will be coming up with their own invention that they will bring to school to share with their classmates. Information will come home in Monday folders regarding this project.
Math- Three digit addition and subtraction is our current topic. This unit should not be too difficult as it an extension of two digit addition and subtraction. We will have a topic test on Wednesday, January 22nd
Writing- In writing we will be focusing on writing technical and non-fiction pieces this quarter. Currently, we are stressing the importance of sentence structure and punctuation. We are also beginning to introduce lower case cursive letters.
